Code of Conduct
One of the basic elements of the 4C Association is the
4C Code of Conduct. This set of practices which are used in the coffee sector guides participants on the way towards a more sustainable production, post-harvest processing and trading of coffee. Through its flexible design it has a moderate entry level and combines this with the commitment to continuous improvement. Like this it is easier accessible for all actors but makes sure that the road towards sustainability is entered.
The 4C Code of Conduct covers 28 social, environmental and economic principles for all actors in the green coffee supply chain (such as farmers, plantations, producer organizations, estates, mills, exporters, traders, etc.).
Once the participants have eliminated 10 practices defined as unacceptable, they have to continuously improve their practices in order to comply with the Code of Conduct.
This unique approach makes 4C a non-competitive but complementary initiative to existing standards.
Important
Revised 4C Code of Conduct with Generic Indicators valid from July 2010 onwards.
The 4C Code of Conduct was revised in May 2009 and from July 2010 on, all 4C Units will be verified against the revised code. The previous Code of Conduct is thus valid only until June 2010.
Following the Code Revision, the 4C Technical Committee also revised the Generic Indicators for the Code Matrix. The Technical Committee presented the final proposal to the Executive Board, as mandated by the Council. This proposal was approved by the Executive Board in February 2010.
