Code of Conduct
One of the basic elements of 4C is the 4C Code of Conduct. This set of practices which are used in the coffee
sector guides participants on the way towards a more sustainable production, post-harvest processing and trading
of coffee. Through its flexible design it has a moderate entry level and combines this with the commitment to
continuous improvement. Like this it is easier accessible for all actors but makes sure that the road towards
sustainability is entered.
The 4C Code of Conduct covers 30 social, environmental and economic principles for all actors in the green coffee
supply chain (such as farmers, plantations, producer organizations, estates, mills, exporters, traders, etc.).
Once the participants have eliminated 10 practices defined as unacceptable, they have to continuously improve their
practices in order to comply with the Code of Conduct.
This unique approach makes 4C a non-competitive but complementary initiative to existing standards.
For details, please consider the Code Document. For further information on social and ecological standards please
