4C in Africa

The 4C Association chose East Africa as the starting point for decentralization of its activities. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the East African Fine Coffees Association (EAFCA) in February 2008 marked the beginning of a very fruitful cooperation, with the 4C Office East Africa being hosted by the EAFCA Secretariat in Kampala, Uganda.

Close cooperation with the International Trade Centre (ITC) in Geneva, publishers of “Coffee – An Exporter’s Guide”, has been another important catalyst for progress. Customized training modules, based on the ITC’s coffee guide, are already available for EAFCA Members and 4C Members. Thanks to the excellent tripartite relationship between 4C, EAFCA and the ITC, the 4C Association is looking forward to further enhancing the continuous improvement of practices amongst participants along the coffee chain.

In West Africa, the 4C Association is concentrating on expanding its network of local contacts through 4C Members and relevant coffee organizations in order to provide broader access to information about the 4C concept and to enable its application throughout the region. The 4C Association has a formal cooperation agreement with the National Agricultural Extension Service (ANADER) in the Ivory Coast, and collaboration with the National Agricultural Research Centre (CNRA) has also been intensified.
