Improving the lives of coffee farmers in Vietnam

“We saw an improvement in the maintenance of the farms – they did the weeding very well and in terms of pesticide management, we found out that they reduced the pesticides they use. Also they have been more conscious on reducing the usage of water in irrigation and basically reducing their costs in production,”

— Mr. Clark during an interview conducted in December 2009 —

The DAKMAN 4C Unit is located in the highland city of Buôn Ma Thuột, which is the capital of Vietnam’s coffee-rich Đắk Lắk province. While this 4C Unit’s headquarters and mill are located in Buôn Ma Thuột, cherries are collected from different buying stations located throughout Đắk Lắk and other neighbouring provinces.

DAKMAN joined the 4C Association in 2007 and Jonathan Clark, Dakman’s General Manager, has witnessed a lot of improvements since the unit's farmers started working with the 4C Code of Conduct four years ago.

4C membership has enabled DAKMAN's farmers to start their journey towards sustainable coffee production within the 4C Unit.

DAKMAN‘s training sessions have been attended by hundreds of the 4C Unit‘s farmers.

The farmers progressively improve their practices and finally step up to more demanding sustainable certification standards. As part of this process, the DAKMAN 4C Unit received Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade certification in 2008 and UTZ in 2009.
